Alan Bush Named to Super Lawyers 2026 for Alternate Dispute Resolution, Mediation Practice

Two years into Alan’s new career as a mediator, Super Lawyers named him to its 2026 list.

Cancer, Alan thought, had ended his days on Super Lawyers lists. Making a list again seemed out of the question; he had no business surviving.

God had other plans. He gave Alan unexplainable peace, while healing me. My incredible wife fought beside me. God then brought Alan together with folks, like Felicia Harris Hoss, who worked hard together to push mediation practice further.

Houston Bar Association Hosts Alan for a 3-Hour Ethics CLE

The Houston Bar Association played host for Alan Bush and Felicia Harris Hoss to broadcast and record three of their ethics talks. Alan and Felicia, as always, had a blast presenting.

The first talk came peppered with video clips from football comedies. Golf comedy clips punctuated the second talk. And the third talk was an all-out gameshow-style competition.

Maximize Resolution's Value:
The Ethical Touchdown Before The Endzone

Mediation timing matters. Wait too long to settle, fees chew up your client’s value. Settle too early, lose the value of pressing your client’s strongest position. As a client’s advisor, counsel owes ethical duties to consider alternative paths to resolution. We’ll talk out practical skills to advise clients and make the most of mediation at any stage of a case.

Advanced Mediation Advocacy and Ethics:
Drive for Show, Putt for Dough

Long drives turn heads; putting skills win tournaments and fans. Trial practice is the same. Over 95% of disputes settle before the long drive to trial. The mediation session is often the closest thing to the client’s day in court. We’ll talk out client-centered advanced mediation and advocacy skills – like advising the client on the mediation process and timing, preparation, and strategy, and ways to effectively work with mediators. Our goal: Your clients will come running back to you and send their friends too.

Are You Ethically Smarter In Court Than a Fifth Grader?

Most ethical rules, boiled down, are common sense. That’s true even when the situation looks complicated. So in Foxworthy-style, we’ll test you out. Compete live against your classmates for all the bragging rights. Are you ethically smarter in court than a fifth grader?

The Litigation Section for the Houston Bar Association Taps Alan to Talk Ethics

The Houston Bar Association’s Litigation Section tapped Alan again - this time, with Felicia Harris Hoss - to talk legal ethics. Alan and Felicia had a blast giving this Foxworthy-style webinar:

The Houston Bar Association's Labor & Employment Section Hosts Alan Moderating a Texas Business Court Judicial Panel

The Houston Bar Association’s Labor & Employment Section hosted Alan Bush who moderated a panel of both judges from the Texas Business Court - Houston Division. Judges Grant Dorfman and Sofia Adrogue gave a great talk on the TBC’s expanded jurisdiction.

The Texas Court Builds on its Inaugural Year -
With Expanded Jurisdiction Over Trade Secrets

Building on a strong inaugural year, the Texas Business Courts now have concurrent jurisdiction over disputes about trade secrets and other intellectual property. The plaintiff might prefer to file in Business Court, or the defendant may find it advantageous to remove there. The two sitting Business Court judges will discuss their court's new jurisdiction — along with their court's procedures for injunctive relief, emergency motions, sealing the record, trial settings, scheduling orders, and more.

HR Southwest Again Calls Alan To Speak: This Time on Mediation

Alan spoke for HR Southwest every year from 2012 until 2018. Then cancer ended his streak. But today, he’s cancer-free and back. HRSW called Alan to speak on his current craft — mediation:

Mediation: Mystery Graveyard for HR Lawsuits

Most employment lawsuits end at mediation. Counsel explains the process, but there’s more at play. How early is too early to mediate? What’s happening in the employee-turned-plaintiff’s room? What emotions may bubble up with our own team? We’ll paint a picture with clips from movies and shows.

Along with Montgomery County District Courts’ rocket-docket, the Business Courts are now also a viable option to resolve business disputes.

Gulp! Big shoes to fill.

Alan will deliver a variant of his popular negotiation ethics talk:

The Ethical Fine Line in Mediation

Negotiations can involve pressure, particularly when attorneys may not be carefully measuring their words. How far is too far to go to get that “sweet deal”? Ethically, that is. As mediators, we’ll get a feel for how to better actively listen to the parties and counsel who want to walk right up to the ethical line.

17th Annual Business Disputes Called Alan to Speak

The Texas Bar called Alan to speak again — this time, for the 17th Annual Business Disputes Course. He presented his popular topic:

Negotiation Ethics: When You Can’t Back Down

Negotiations involve pressure. When your back is to the wall, how far can or should you go to get a sweet deal? Ethically, that is. Lawyers must measure their words to opponents – and their own clients.

  • A recent trial of a $51 million Texas Uniform Trade Secrets Act claim that resulted in a double-directed verdict in Montgomery County; and

  • How the Business Courts may be a venue worth considering for trade secrets disputes in certain situations.
